Artis or Natura Artis Magistra is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest zoos of Europe. Artis contains a zoo, an aquarium and a planetarium. The Royal Zoo also has an arboretum and a fairly large art collection. A part of the art collection is on display in the Aquarium building of the Zoo. Artis has 27 monumental buildings, most of which are used as enclosures for animals and it makes Artis a unique cultural heritage of the 19th century.
We visited The Artis on a rainy day, but we were so surprised and had so wonderful time in the Zoo, that we even enjoyed the rain and it added a charm to our visiting Amsterdam Royal Zoo.
Many and birds animals are freely walking on the open territory of the Zoo or inside special houses and people are allowed to touch some of them (the most people-friendly of them).
